The DC Civil War Has Begun

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

As predicted by Marion Barry, the first volley of attacks has occurred in the DC battle over gay marriage.

The attack comes in the form of a bill with 30 initial co-sponsors, notably including Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Dan Boren (D-Okla.), that directly opposes the DC Council decision earlier this month to recognize same-sex marriages legally performed in other jurisdictions. The “DC Defense of Marriage Act” states that for all legal purposes, “marriage” means the union of one man and one woman. If it passes, it will undo the DC Council’s decision as well as preempt any DC marriage equality bill.

Conservative opponents of gay marriage in the District continue to claim that the majority of DC residents oppose gay marriage. Religious and other leaders plan to petition the Council for a citywide referendum. Again, the suggestion is made that a black-majority, traditionally made up of notably religious Democrats, opposes gay marriage and any attempt to recognize same-sex marriage from other jurisdictions. Until the referendum shows otherwise, that appears to be the type of hype and speculation that keeps naysayers like Bishop Harry Jackson of Lanham’s Hope Christian Church in the media spotlight.

Not only is this a gay rights battle, but it is also an example of the states rights conflict that sets DC apart from every other jurisdiction because, despite having a council, it lacks its own legislative representation. In other words, regardless of a decision made by DC local rules, the federal Congress can intrude with its own agenda.

Put succinctly by Jeffrey Richardson, president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, a group that represents gay residents of the District:

The disappointing thing is that here we are fighting to govern and pass our own laws in the District of Columbia, and Bishop Jackson chooses to run to Capitol Hill to stand with congressmen to impose their will upon the residents of the District of Columbia.1

Of course, none of this will matter if Mr. Broun of Georgia, and company, get their way… (yes, unlikely in this Democrat-heavy Congress, but why again are we paying the salaries of people who waste time trying to pass such amendments when the economy is still tanking, people are still dying in distant and pointless wars, and so many other problems in this nation exist?)

May 7, 2009… Mr. BROUN of Georgia (for himself, Mr. CANTOR, Mr. NEUGEBAUER, Mr. TAYLOR, Mr. WESTMORELAND, Mr. JORDAN of Ohio, Mr. BURTON of Indiana, Mr. ALEXANDER, Mr. SOUDER, Mr. MCHENRY, Mr. FLEMING, Mr. PITTS, Mrs. BLACKBURN, Mr. MARCHANT, Mr. MCKEON, Mr. GINGREY of Georgia, Ms. FALLIN, Mr. HUNTER, Mr. PENCE, Mr. SCALISE, Mr. SHUSTER, Mr. WHITFIELD, Mr. TIAHRT, and Mr. ROGERS of Alabama) introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

JOINT RESOLUTION

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage .

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled (two-thirds of each House concurring therein), That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States:

`Article–

`Section 1. This article may be cited as the `Marriage Protection Amendment’.

`Section 2. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.’.

Carrie Prejean is Wet

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Carrie Prejean really is Miss USA. She is a roving social microcosm of America – right down from her narrow mentality to her capped teeth and breast implants. She exemplifies what makes the USA so great.

Better yet, Carrie Prejean is a hypocrite, which makes her excessively American. She mindlessly espouses being a Christian without having any real clue about what it means to be a Christian. The Christian brand has become so muddled that the marketing of it is a bit tricky. You have to stick a wet finger in the air to see which way Jesus blows today. Speaking of wet fingers, Carrie, who was afraid she didn’t have the assets to become Miss USA and subsequently sought external funding to increase her asset base, wasn’t too ashamed of her pre-adulterated temple such that she had somebody take photos of her unadorned self. Still, there were improvements that could be made.

Maybe Carrie was following the adage of “God helps those who help themselves”. Her tributes to God were not of silver and gold resting at the steps of a local place of worship, but instead Carrie used silver and gold to adorn herself since every man’s (or woman’s) body is a temple. Why not carry around the tribute for the rest of her life instead of dumping it some place where no one can see it? That’s our Carrie!

Of course, hypocrisy knows no bounds. Even having many examples walk across the stage before her, Carrie threw caution to the wind and casually forgot that she had already exposed herself to the cameras before her appearance as Miss California USA. She decided to ask for help in building her tribute. Californians (or in this case at least a few), so ready and willing to help Carrie become the model California woman, cheerily gave up their gold and silver in order to help her build the tribute necessary to appease her god. After the revelations of nude photos, those few Californians who chipped in to increase Carrie’s assets have now decided that she didn’t properly represent the Miss California USA pageant and they may strip her of her title. Really now, can American hypocrisy get any better than this?

California has its panties in a twist right now. A majority of them voted to make it illegal for same-sex couples to marry, so Carrie’s wet-finger-in-the-air told her to state the popular conservative Christian response that gays can’t marry, but she didn’t realize that Jesus was blowing from different directions the day the nude photos were revealed. Ah, Carrie, when you wet your finger your mind is in another place, I know. It happens.

Carrie’s actions represent the best of hypocritical America, and her mind represents the worst of a marginalized America. So, I hereby proudly announce that Carrie Prejean is Miss USA 2009!

Andrew Sullivan Still Doesn’t Get It

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

I politely jeered at Andrew Sullivan in my last article for not going “straight” on religion. However, I revel in his attacks on his conservative brethren, because Andrew has the ability to be unforgiving. In this case, the target of his indignation hits close to home: gays. Andrew correctly states that conservatives of the NRO are saying that “homosexuals can go to hell”. Too bad Andrew fell short again.

But, here we are in front of the same issue as before. Is this really a cultural issue? Maybe. Everything that goes on in our society is in some way, culture. Culture comes from cultivate or to grow. Anything cultural stems from whatever growth we experience as a society. For to grow as a society, we must grow as a culture.

In his article, Andrew correctly identifies the stereotypical, culturally conservative position that is magnified in the NRO’s editorial as not giving a damn about homosexuals. They definitely don’t. However, again, Andrew misses the point. No wonder Andrew doesn’t accept comments on his blog.

The NRO editorial exemplifies the impact of religious culture in our society, even though the NRO never mentions the word religion. There is no reason to deny homosexuals any number of rights, privileges or recognitions in our society, and there never has been except for religion. Oh, the NRO mentions “social institution” and “public policy” as the reasons to deny homosexuals the right of marriage, but the NRO is intellectually bankrupt because the same arguments were used to keep blacks in slavery. You see, the only basis for denying homosexual marriage is religion. If the abrahamic faiths didn’t exist, very likely neither would mores against homosexuals and homosexual acts. Anti-homosexual positions may exist in non-abrahamic faiths, but Judaism, Christianity and Islam have done, by far, the most damage to homosexuals, among others, by sheer size and clout.

I must shout to Andrew over and above the din of mad clicking activity that happens at his blog to make him aware that while I agree with his view of the NRO editorial, he is yet again falling short on the real subject: religion has caused the anti-homosexual social practices, attitudes and laws that he is fighting against. Andrew can’t see the forest for the trees.

When will Andrew Sullivan give up on his religion and recognize it for the shortfall it has created in his life and others?

Update: Andrew, Andrew, Andrew … Deal With It, Maggie? Here it is, “But I can note that as one of the first and longest campaigners for marriage equality, my own commitment to religious freedom in America is as ferocious and as impassioned as any Christianist’s”. Andrew, you want religious freedom but you fail to understand that your desire to have religious freedom means that nobody gets any freedom from any of it. Christianity, above all faiths (just barely), requires proselytization, which means you must submit to my will. Do you get it yet?

When Will Obama Go to an Atheist Meetup?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

President Obama has not attended an atheist meetup, drinking skepchickally, skeptics in the pub, or other nonbeliever event since he took office, despite his inaugural address pledge to acknowledge nonbelievers, and his continued insistence on “reaching across the aisle” to acknowledge and respect those with different beliefs.

“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace,” Obama stated in his inaugural address.

Within his first few months in office, Obama has already reached that hand of respect out to all corners of the earth, from offers to speak with leaders of Muslim nations to actually visiting heavily Islamic countries , bringing offerings of peace, and an explicit assurance that the United States is not at war with Islam.

Domestically, Obama has reinvigorated the controversial faith-based initiative, favoring religious discrimination in organizations that receive federal funding, and stocking his advisory panel with a heavy majority of theists.

Despite this overt and frequent outreach to religious organizations domestic and foreign, Obama has made no effort to connect with the non-believers he pledged to treat with the same respect and attention as believers. His reference to non-believers seems, in hindsight, to have been nothing other than a hat-tip to the often left-leaning fifteen percent of the nation, most of whom helped him get elected.

Obama has also pledged to seek a new church for himself and his family, subjecting his minor daughters to indoctrination in dogma almost universally rejected by the scientists of the world, with details disagreed upon by nearly every other religious denomination or sect. He has yet to choose one, indicating that he must take into consideration the interference he would cause with church attendance of fellow church members. Why has he not taken into consideration the idea that by choosing to be an active practitioner of an ancient superstitious ritual, he interferes with the ability of both non-believers and those who believe in different superstitions to be treated with respect and equality in a nation founded with an explicit separation of church and state?

President Obama, pick yourself a church along with your wife. Let your children play in the White House playground, or have them tutored by someone who respects reality and can encourage them to be skeptical instead of dogmatic. And then make a surprise visit to a Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, or Sam Harris lecture/debate, or an atheist meetup. You might get some shit from the fundamentalists, but didn’t you say something about reaching out to everyone, despite their beliefs? You reached out to one of the most hated homophobes, Rick Warren, for your invocation. What’s stopping you from reaching out to people who don’t happen to share your monotheistic point of view?

This article is a rebuttal to the Fox News Blog comment “BILL SAMMON: When Will Obama Go to Church?” by Bill Sammon, Managing Editor, Washington Bureau, FOX News Channel, which, out of all the things that someone could find fault about Obama over, chooses to attack Obama’s lack of church attendance since his swearing-in.

Recall Bachmann ‘09

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Minnesota has given the world Michele Bachmann, and I am not sure what to think of Minnesota right now. This is the start of the Recall Bachmann ‘09 campaign.

Minnesotans are often portrayed as no-nonsense, hard-working, dutiful Mid-Westerners. Northern Plains people, to be exact. They endure all sorts of weather from the searing heat of summer to the deep, bitter cold of winter. Still, they march on through life with a simple, solid approach, even if they are just a little different. At least this is the impression that Garrison Keillor gives me about Minnesotans. I haven’t listened to Keillor lately — I’m sure he must be as aghast that his people have turned loose Ms Bachmann on rest of the world.

How did Minnesotans choose to elect Bachmann in the first place? Certainly, she is physically attractive, so if Minnesotans were going by looks alone they didn’t make a bad choice. However, it’s difficult to imagine how Minnesotans chose their representation by looks alone, but maybe they aren’t really different than the rest of us, no matter how much Keillor tries to make me believe so. Maybe over the past decade the sensible Minnesotans decided to leave behind the cold, harsh winters of Minnesota for places like, maybe, Iowa.

I had no idea Bachmann even existed until that fateful afternoon last Fall when she appeared on Hardball. Chris Matthews often interrupts his guests and tries to pin them down on what they are saying (or perhaps what he wants them to say), but on that particular afternoon Matthews let Bachmann drive the show. He gave her plenty of room to loosen the garrote she put around her own neck, but in that sheer determination of a Minnesotan during a hard winter, Bachmann resisted any help and continued to tighten the garrote until she was extremely red, so to speak (never, ever blue). Certainly, her declaration of an anti-American (read communist) witch-hunt would cause Minnesotans to revisit their decision to choose her as a representative to the world. We are certainly aware that a few Minnesotans had a change of heart, but I guess in the final estimation of representational abilities, Elwyn Tinklenberg just wasn’t as sexy as Michele Bachmann. We all know that she wasn’t elected based on brains.

Of course, if you haven’t recently heard, Ms Bachmann has ventured into the subjects of world finance, constitutional law and general political anarchy (the two of which are rather incompatible, but I have a feeling that incompatibility has never been a concern to Ms Bachmann). Let’s examine the major points of Ms Bachmann’s political expertise:

  1. Bachmann thinks that we should have a McCarthyesque hunt for anti-Americans and terrorists amongst her peers in Congress. VIDEO
  2. Bachmann thinks that Tim Geithner has violated the Constitution, but fails to understand that the Constitution allows Congress to pass laws under which the Department of Treasury operates. VIDEO (first segment, but all segments are worthy)
  3. Bachmann believes that America has been invaded (by whom we are not sure) and she is working behind enemy lines. She encourages the citizens to overthrow their own government, the same government for which she participates as an elected representative. Article on TPM

I am protesting Michele Bachmann. I am protesting stupidity, no matter what it looks like. I hereby call upon all Minnesotans to demand that Michele Bachmann resign from her seat in the House of Representatives, and if she does not comply, to overthrow the government, specifically responding to Bachmann’s own request. I call upon Minnesotans to rid the political world of at least one stupid, incompetent and dangerous politician. Sure, this one among many, but we have to start somewhere.

I almost forgot. I am also protesting Minnesotans inability to decide on their choice of a US Senator. I guess Ms Bachmann finds that an acceptable distraction to her political antics and anarchy.  If I were a conspiratorialist, I would proclaim that Ms Bachmann had some hand in creating that distraction, but honestly I don’t think she has the mental capacity.

Mr Keillor, where is the Minnesotan sensibility here? Where are Minnesotans? Have they entirely evicted common sense from the land of ten thousand lakes? Or are they too busy counting ballots in the senate race to pay attention to what one of their own daughters is doing?
