At least that’s what the U.S. House of Representatives is making its pretty new “resolution” out to represent.
I spotted this one at Pharyngula, and I just couldn’t take the chance that it might be missed by anyone. Here’s the brunt of this blatant attempt to overturn the First Amendment’s clause against establishment: (Except that, since it’s not a “law”, as David kindly points out in the comments, the First Amendment has no power over it. Uhm… loophole, anyone? This is a crock, law or not.)
…the House of Representatives–
(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;
(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;
(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;
(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;
(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and
(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.
Please go to Pharyngula and read the whole thing, plus a list of all the sponsors and co-sponsors. If one of those idiots belongs to your state, please contact that mis-representative and say how you feel about this. Or just try to get them fired.

Whatever happened to the first amendment?
I looked up my state reps and wrote out a letter.

I just read that you are supporting H. Res. 847. I think this is a horrible idea, and completely divests yourself of any impartiality. It is the impartiality of your position that demands that you treat all of your constituents equally, regardless of their background or religion.
By supporting a bill the in essence creates a state sponsorship of one religion over the another, you are greiviously shifting the balance of government away from the concept that we are all equals. Please reconsider your position on this.
None here.
It’s *not* a law, and therefore it isn’t covered by the US’ First Amendment. It’s merely a *resolution* which has no power to change anything, even if/when it’s passed.
The House is merely agreeing to say that Christianity is like, teh kewl. It will have no bearing on US *law* whatsoever. As one of the commenters says at Pharyngula, it’s “empty political pandering”.
Thanks, David. I used the wrong term.
Silly congresspeople. Bleh.
Next, they’ll be passing a resolution to have a mandatory pre-session prayer!
No probs. And yes, it *is* a crock, it’s obviously pandering to reactionaries. Just no need to panic, that’s all.
David,
I just checked out Strange Times. Excellent stuff, and I’m putting a link up to it right now.
Thanks for stopping by StOP.
No worries, glad you liked Strange Times!
