Good post. We in the USA don’t like to believe that we have homegrown terrorists. We want to view the Tim McVeighs and Scott Roeders as aberrations, weirdos with their own warped agendas. If there’s one thing Americans are good at, it’s willfully blinding ourselves to our condition. We’re the world’s Scarlett O’Hara nation – I won’t think about it today, I’ll think about it tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day.

The state of Kansas actually does a pretty fair job of defining terrorism:

21-3449. Terrorism. (a) Terrorism is the commission of, the attempt to commit or the conspiracy to commit any felony with the intent to intimidate or coerce the civilian population, influence government policy by intimidation or coercion or to affect the operation of any unit of government.

Roeder hasn’t been charged with terrorism under the state statute, but he may well be, if the state’s attorney thinks he can prove it. However, a conviction for first degree murder will result in a life sentence or death, rendering a conviction for terrorism moot. Why not charge terrorism? It complicates the case, and makes it more difficult to prove. If the Arkansas prosecutor in the above cited case thinks he can make terrorism charges stick, more power to him, but they’re certainly not necessary.

The IRA engaged in an agenda of terrorism in order to progress their cause. They didn’t care who was innocently taken down with any particular act of terrorism. Dr Tiller could have moved two feet in any other direction and that bullet could have hit someone else, an otherwise innocent person. The bombers of abortion clinics don’t care which pregnant women are in the waiting room of the abortion clinic, either.

Terrorism doesn’t have to have religion as a basis for it. If religion never existed, we would still have the concept of terror and terrorism. Religion just happens to be the basis for the agenda of terrorist right-wing nutjobs who hate abortion.

Not sure JNTB is saying that the IRA has a religious motivation. From my reading, I understand the article as indicating that the IRA, like other organizations classified as “terrorists,” have taken responsibility for terrorist actions, and that is sufficiently similar to the religious right’s rhetoric regarding the actions of abortion clinic attackers. Thus the analogy should lead one to classify the religious right as a terrorist organization, as well. The point of the article, it seems, is that despite that fundamental similarity, the religious right is not treated like or called a terrorist organization, presumably because the particular underlying religion is Christianity.

Religion wasn’t the motive behind the IRA, religion was used to show ancestry. The IRA fought for unification with the Republic of Ireland not to push a religious agenda.
